CYPHERIAN CALIGRAPHY (1995-6) The Cypherians are a fictional culture with a rich calligraphic tradition. The meaning of any word has two aspects: its objective, denotative meaning, seen as its "kernal", and a surrounding "halo" of its associative connotations. Cypherian language is 100% connotation. Its denotative content is zero. Further, like hieroglyphs, Cypherian writing is based on pictograms, providing a seamless linkage between objects in the world, their representation in sculpture or drawing, and their abstraction in a profile or cypher in a written text. Hence, Cypherian calligraphy, while tied back to the things of the world, is grasped and understood through pure connotation — in precisely the same way as music is.
